Charred Maple Spurtle

Signature Series

$40.00

Carved by hand from maple, this 12-inch spurtle is a sturdy, everyday kitchen tool with a little extra drama.

I finished this piece using a Japanese shou sugi ban-inspired charring technique, then partially re-carved the surface to bring the lighter maple back through. The result is a strong contrast between the dark, toasted exterior and the warm golden grain underneath. It gives the spurtle a rich, almost carved-relief look, especially across the wide flat blade.

At 1¾ inches wide, it’s a great size for stirring, scraping, sautéing, and working around the bottom of a pan. The flat shape makes it especially useful for oatmeal, risotto, sauces, eggs, and anything that benefits from a little more surface contact than a regular spoon.

The handle has a subtle hand-kolrosed grass stalk design, adding a small quiet detail without competing with the bold charred finish. It’s rustic, useful, and one-of-a-kind — made to work hard and look good doing it.
