American Chestnut Eating Spoon

Signature Series

$50.00

You want a spoon that feels good in the hand and brings meaning to everyday meals. This hand-carved American Chestnut spoon does both — and carries a story unlike any other wood in North America. The American Chestnut once dominated eastern forests, with billions of trees stretching from Maine to Mississippi. The chestnut blight, a fungal disease discovered in 1904, wiped out nearly every mature tree within a generation. The species is functionally extinct today. Old root systems still send up shoots, but most die back before reaching maturity. Finding workable chestnut wood is genuinely rare.

This spoon was carved from a piece of that history. The smooth bowl is shaped for comfortable daily eating, while the handle retains its original bark — the dark, speckled surface you can feel under your thumb is the tree itself, unaltered. Burnished with a river rock and finished with oil, the bowl offers a warm satin feel that only improves with use. A simple utensil, made from a wood most people will never hold.
