You want a spoon that feels good in the hand and has a story worth telling. This hand-carved American Chestnut eating spoon does both — while preserving a remarkably direct connection to the tree it came from.

American Chestnut once dominated eastern forests, with billions of trees stretching from Maine to Mississippi. After chestnut blight arrived in the early 1900s, nearly every mature tree disappeared within a generation. Today, the species is considered functionally extinct, making workable chestnut wood genuinely rare.

This spoon was carved from a salvaged piece of that history. The smooth, rounded bowl is comfortable for everyday eating, while the handle retains the tree’s naturally textured inner bark. I left that surface intentionally, creating a beautiful contrast between the refined bowl and the more rustic, straight-from-the-tree handle.

Burnished with a river rock and finished with food-safe oil, it feels warm and smooth where it matters while still carrying the unmistakable character of the original tree.
