Carved by hand from American chestnut, this 13-inch serving spoon has a long, slender handle and a generous 2½-inch bowl — a graceful piece made from one of the rarest and most meaningful woods I get to work with.

The American chestnut once dominated eastern forests by the billions before chestnut blight nearly wiped out mature trees across its native range. Today, it is considered functionally extinct, which makes workable chestnut wood genuinely rare. This spoon was carved from a salvaged piece of that history and shaped into something meant to be used, held, and passed around the table.

The bowl has beautiful natural streaking, with warm golden tones and darker grain lines running through the wood. Its size makes it well suited for serving vegetables, grains, roasted potatoes, salads, or anything shared family-style. The long handle gives it an elegant reach and a light, balanced feel in the hand.

This piece is intentionally simple, letting the chestnut speak for itself. The slender handle, softly carved bowl, and visible grain all point back to the tree it came from — a once-common giant of the eastern forest, now rarely seen in this form.
