Carved by hand from salvaged American chestnut, this 12-inch serving spoon brings a rare piece of American forest history back into everyday use.

American chestnut trees once numbered in the billions across the eastern United States before chestnut blight nearly eliminated mature trees from the landscape. Today, the species is considered functionally extinct, making its wood increasingly rare—and especially meaningful to hold and use.

The spoon’s generous 2-3/4-inch bowl is well suited for serving vegetables, grains, salads, potatoes, and other dishes meant to be passed around the table. Warm golden tones and darker streaks run through the wood, giving each part of the spoon its own natural character.

Along the tapered handle, I added hand-cut geometric chip carving that creates texture and shadow while still letting the chestnut itself remain the focus.

This is a spoon made to be used, not just displayed—a small piece of a tree that once shaped entire forests, given a new life in your kitchen and at your table.
