Carved by hand from salvaged American chestnut, this roughly 12-inch serving spoon feels like a piece of the forest brought straight to your table.

American chestnut trees once numbered in the billions across the eastern United States before chestnut blight nearly eliminated mature trees from the landscape. Today, the species is considered functionally extinct, making its wood increasingly rare—and especially meaningful to hold and use.

This spoon has an especially rustic character. I intentionally left much of the rough, textured inner bark along the handle, preserving a direct connection to the tree it came from. The contrast between that weathered surface and the smoothly carved wood gives the spoon an authentic, almost “from the forest floor” feel.

The bowl is about 2-1/2 inches wide, with a generous, slightly squared shape that works beautifully for serving vegetables, grains, potatoes, salads, and other dishes shared around the table. Natural dark streaks and color variations run through the bowl and handle, making this truly a one-of-a-kind piece.

It’s a spoon meant to be used—but one that still looks and feels unmistakably like the tree it came from.
