Most cooking spoons focus only on function, leaving no room for meaning or craft beyond utility. This spoon was made with the idea that a tool can work hard and carry a story.
Carved from black birch, this 13” cooking spoon features a flat-tipped bowl designed for practical, everyday cooking—scraping pans cleanly, folding ingredients, and handling thicker foods with control. The shape is intentional and reliable, but it’s not the main reason this spoon stands out.
Running the length of the handle is a Celtic knot pattern, carved by hand using kolrosing. Each line is cut with a knife and darkened with pigment, creating a permanent design that’s worked directly into the wood—not printed, burned, or applied after the fact. The knotwork speaks to continuity, interconnection, and time—an idea that fits naturally with a spoon meant to be used daily for years.
The result is a functional kitchen tool with a strong visual identity: balanced in the hand, durable in use, and distinctive in a way mass-produced utensils can’t replicate. A spoon that does its job well—and carries meaning while it does.
