This spoon begins with a decision: what if the handle was built from wood rather than carved?

The chevron pattern running the full length is not decorative carving — it's inlay. Thin strips of mixed New England hardwoods, each a different species with its own color and grain, are carefully fitted together in alternating angles to form a continuous herringbone from ball finial to neck. Light against dark, honey tones against walnut brown. The geometry is deliberate; the variation is the wood's.

The joinery has to land right before anything else can happen. Each strip is shaped and set so the angles align cleanly at every seam. Once the inlay holds together, the handle is shaped around it — tapering toward the neck, the finial rounded to sit comfortably in the palm.

The bowl is hickory: dense and figured, with a depth that comes out in low light. It hollows cleanly and holds a fine edge along the rim.

It reads differently depending on how you hold it. Straight on, it's geometry. From the side, it's grain. In use, it's just a very good spoon.
