This maple spoon announces itself before you pick it up. The handle is shot through with curly figure — tight, shimmering ripples that run the length of the wood and catch the light as you turn it. Midway up, a dark natural knot interrupts the grain, and rather than carve around it, chip carving frames it on all sides, making it the deliberate center of attention. It's a good example of what handwork can do that machines can't: find the character in a piece of wood and build around it.

The bowl is wide and flat-tipped — more spatula-like than round — which makes it especially useful for scraping, folding, and getting into the corners of a pan. The handle tapers to a clean faceted end cap that gives it a finished, considered feel in hand.

At 13", it's the right size for serious kitchen use. But this one's as much about the wood as the work.
