Ringed Walnut Cooking Spoon

This 12-inch Premium Collection spoon is hand-carved from spalted walnut, with a broad 3-inch oblong bowl shaped across the grain so the tree’s growth rings become part of the design.

That transverse cut gives the bowl a completely different look from a typical wooden spoon. Concentric rings sweep across the surface, while the walnut’s classic brown heartwood forms a distinct oval through the center, surrounded by lighter sapwood. Light spalting adds another layer of variation—small marks left behind as the natural decay process had just begun to change the wood.

The handle is covered with intricate chip carving, creating a repeating geometric pattern that is as much about feel as appearance. The carving gives the handle a wonderfully tactile surface in the hand and adds a level of detail that rewards a closer look.

There’s a lot happening in this piece, but almost all of it comes directly from the tree: growth rings, heartwood, sapwood, spalting, and grain. The carving simply builds on what was already there.

It’s a piece of functional art, but very much meant to be used, handled, and enjoyed.
