The basics: What is green wood spoon carving?
People have made spoons and other simple tools out of wood for thousands of years. Carving them while the wood is fresh and “green” is a special kind of woodworking that takes advantage of the fact that green wood is still relatively soft and easy to work with hand tools like carving knives.

Is the Wood Really Green?
Not quite! In this context, “green” wood doesn’t refer to the color—it simply means the wood has been freshly cut. Unlike seasoned wood, which has been left to dry for months or even years, green wood still retains a significant amount of moisture. When it comes to lumber, the drying process is often accelerated by baking the wood in massive kilns, which evaporate the moisture and prepare the wood for other uses.
If you’ve ever tried to light a fire with wet wood, you’ve probably heard that unmistakable hissing sound as water and steam escape from the logs. This is because freshly cut wood can contain up to 50% of its weight in water! It’s a fascinating reminder of how trees act as giant water pumps, playing a crucial role in the water cycle.
Why Use Green Wood for Making Spoons?
Green wood’s high moisture content makes it relatively soft and pliable—perfect for carving by hand. While this flexibility is less than ideal for building houses or furniture, it’s a dream for spoon carving. The fibers are much easier to shape at this stage, allowing for intricate and efficient craftsmanship.
However, carving green wood comes with its challenges. If the spoons dry too quickly after being carved, they can crack. To avoid this, the drying process is carefully controlled, ensuring the spoons dry slowly and evenly. Once dried, the spoons are significantly lighter and stiffer, ready to be finished with oil for a lifetime of enjoyment and use!
From freshly felled trees to finely crafted utensils, green wood brings a natural charm and a hands-on connection to the materials they are made from. It’s a process steeped in tradition, practicality, and respect for the resources provided to us by Mother Nature.
