This spoon is carved from spalted maple — a wood that starts pale and clean, then gets interrupted. The spalting runs through the handle as dark lines and ink-black marks where fungal activity moved through the grain before the wood was cut. The bowl is nearly white, smooth and close-grained. The contrast between the two tells you something about where this piece of wood has been.

The bowl is wide — 2¾ inches across — with a tip angled for right-hand use. That angle isn't decorative. It's the difference between a spoon that works with you along the bottom of a pan and one that fights you. The neck is carved sturdy on purpose, built to handle daily cooking without flex or worry. This is a spoon you reach for without thinking about it.

At 12 inches, it sits at a useful length — long enough to keep your hand clear of the heat, short enough to feel like it belongs in the kitchen rather than a display case. The maple will stay light for a while, then slowly warm with oil and use. The spalted lines in the handle will be there the whole time.
