Spalted Pear Cooking Spoon

Signature Series

$35.00

This spoon is carved from spalted Bradford pear. The spalting shows up in the bowl as dark lines and ink-black marks — fungal activity that moved through the grain before the wood was cut. The handle stays clean and light. You can see exactly where the spalting starts and stops, and that's what makes this piece worth looking at.

It's a small cooking spoon, sized for sauces, grains, risotto — the kind of cooking where you want to feel what's happening at the bottom of the pan. The handle is octagon-shaped and tapered, which does two things: it gives you a firm grip, and it keeps the spoon from rolling off the counter. I carve the octagon by hand, and it's one of those details that disappears once you're used to it. You just notice when it's not there.

At 11 inches, it's long enough to keep your hand clear of the heat, short enough to actually use every day. The pear will darken a little over time with oil and use. The spalted lines in the bowl aren't going anywhere.
